The agency made alot of effort to ensure my expectations and preferred choice of tutoring style aligned to whom they chose for my daughter to do a trial lesson. Happy to say they made a right selection and my daughter learns while enjoying the lesson with the tutor.

What maths tuition costs

Two numbers are worth knowing, and they answer different questions: what we charge, and what other parents actually decided to spend.

LionCity Tutors hourly rates by level and tutor type
LevelUndergraduateFull-time tutorMOE-trained teacher
Primary School$25–$40$40–$60$60–$80
Secondary School$35–$50$50–$70$70–$90
Junior College$50–$70$70–$90$90–$120

LionCity Tutors' own rates per hour, reviewed July 2026. Our figures, not an industry benchmark.

For context on what families actually commit to: across 254 of our assignments, parents budgeted $30 to $45 an hour at primary level (154 assignments), $40 to $50 an hour at secondary (75 assignments) and $45 to $65 an hour at JC (16 assignments, indicative). Those are budgets parents asked for rather than rates finally agreed, they cover all subjects rather than maths alone, and they were last reviewed August 2026.

What actually decides a maths grade

Three things come up in almost every maths assignment we place. They are worth understanding before choosing a tutor, because they change what you should be asking a tutor to do.

E-Math or E-Math plus A-Math?

A-Math is close to mandatory for several JC routes and engineering-adjacent Polytechnic courses, so dropping it closes doors that are hard to reopen. It also assumes fluent Sec 3 algebra — which is where our tutors see A-Math grades actually decided, not in the calculus itself.

Why a student who understands maths still loses marks

Far more marks go to execution than to gaps in knowledge: dropped negative signs, rounding partway through the working, a number copied wrongly out of the question, the calculator left in the wrong angle mode. These need a different fix from a concept gap, which is why they have to be logged separately.

Why more past papers alone often does not work

It is possible to get very good at recognising questions you have already practised without getting better at recognising the concept underneath them. Papers only pay off when every wrong answer is categorised, corrected and re-attempted a few days later.

The O-Level Maths guide sets out the ten mistakes our tutors correct most across E-Math and A-Math, with the fix for each.

How we match a maths tutor

Matching is done by hand rather than by dropping your request onto a job board, and it usually takes about 6 hours.

  1. You tell us the specifics. Level, whether it is E-Math, A-Math or H2, the current grade, location and timing.
  2. We shortlist by hand from tutors who have taught that syllabus at that level — not whoever happens to be free.
  3. You get profiles to choose from, with rates, experience and availability. The choice stays yours.
  4. A first lesson checks the fit. If it is not right, tell us and we will match someone else at no cost.

Parents pay the tutor directly at the tutor's rate. There is no agency fee at any point.

Maths tuition FAQs

How much does maths tuition cost in Singapore?

Our rates run from $25 an hour for an undergraduate tutor at primary level to $120 for an MOE-trained teacher at JC. The table above breaks this down by level and tutor type.

Which tutor type should I choose for maths?

Undergraduates are usually the right call for building confidence and covering foundations. Full-time tutors suit students who need consistent structure across a whole year. MOE-trained teachers are worth the premium mainly when a student is close to their target grade and needs marking-standard precision.

Can I change tutors if it is not working out?

Yes, at no cost — parents never pay us an agency fee in the first place. Tell us what is not working and we will match a replacement.

Is there a trial lesson?

Yes. A first lesson lets both sides check the fit. With maths in particular, whether a tutor can explain a method a second way — rather than louder — is usually obvious within one session.

How fast can you find a maths tutor?

Usually within 6 hours. A specific school, an unusual timing window, or a location far from most tutors can take longer.
